French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said Wednesday it was a mistake to call for the creation of a state secretariat for human rights while Minister of State for Human Rights Rama Yade disagreed.
"I think it was wrong to request a State Secretariat for Human Rights. It is a mistake." Kouchner said in an interview with daily Le Parisien at the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
"There is contradiction between human rights and foreign policy of a state, even in France," he said. "We cannot conduct foreign policy of a country only in terms of human rights."
Yade, 31, the youngest in the cabinet, said France, the homeland of human rights, knows that human rights "never built on the sacrifice or the sacrifice of principles or values."
Kouchner and Yade are expected to meet Wednesday at ceremonies of celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the UN General Assembly on 10 December1948 in Paris.
