Bulgarian students and professors gathered here at a peaceful rally Friday against the murder of a pharmacy student in the Studentski Grad (Students' Town).
Stoyan Baltov, 20, was beaten to death by several drunk boys when he passed the Amenesia Disco on Dec. 5. The attack was of no apparent reasons.
Sofia's quarter Student's Town comprises mostly student dormitories, where about 50,000 university students from various higher education institutions in Sofia live during the academic year.
The demonstration started at the "Hristo Botev" hall in the Students' Town with more than 1,000 university students and professors participated. The President of Sofia University Professor Ivan Ilchev and the President of the Medical University of Sofia Professor Vanyo Mitev also joined in the rally.
The protesters mourned in front of the Amenesia Disco to express their condolences to the dead student, then handed in a statement demanding for a better security environment to the municipal government in the Students' Town.
Adriana Ivanova from the association emphasized that if their demands were not met by Tuesday, they will continue their protest rallies.
A total of five suspects have been arrested for Stoyan's murder in the day after the incident occurred. All but one were almost immediately released, and only one of those released was imposed a500 leva (about 333 U.S. dollars) bail. The fifth suspect remains behind bars as the investigation continues.
