French President Nicolas Sarkozy appointed the UMP deputy Bruno Le Maire as France's minister for European Affairs on Friday in Brussels.
Bruno Le Maire, 39 and the former aide of former Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin, will take over from Jean-Pierre Jouyet, who is to head the AMF market authority in France.
Sarkozy described his new minister for European Affairs as a "talented young man who is deeply committed to Europe."
Le Maire will begin his new job on Saturday morning, a French diplomat said. He is due to travel with Sarkozy to the European Parliament on Tuesday.
Sarkozy announced his appointment during a European Union summit in Brussels. France's EU presidency will end on Jan. 1 when the Czech Republic will take over.
