Snow causes chaos in southwestern Austria

Due to heavy snowfalls over the past two days, many roads in southwestern Austria were blocked, many households suffered blackouts, and some schools were forced to close.

According to a Friday report released by Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics of Austria(ZAMG), Austria's southwestern states of Carinthia and Tyrol suffered most from the snowfalls. As much as 102 centimeters of fresh snow have fallen inLienz of East Tyrol within 48 hours.

Austrian Television ORF also reported on Friday that in the southwestern city of Lesachtal near Italy, which is now totally cut off from the outside world, the accumulated snowfall has reached 200 centimeters in two days.

The heavy snow also blocked many roads in southwestern Austria,while some railways were also seriously impacted. Spokesperson of the Austrian Railways Christoph Posch confirmed that some train services in southern Austria at the Italian border have already been suspended due to the snowfalls, and may not be able to resumeuntil Sunday evening.

Some 3,000 households in southern Austria lost electricity due to the heavy snow, about 2,500 of which remained in dark by Fridaynoon as the repair work was progressing slowly.
