Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski and U.S. Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security John Rood met on Tuesday to discuss the U.S.-Russia talks on the deployment in Poland and the Czech Republic of the U.S. anti- missile shield.
Rood has come to Poland directly following his talks in Moscow, said Sikorski, quoted by Polish news agency PAP.
Sikorski said after the meeting that Rood had met him to provide the Polish side with "the full information about the American-Russian talks on mutual confidence building measures."
He added the talk also concerned negotiations with Russia planned by Poland still this year.
"We deem our dialogue with Russia beneficial. We think that mutuality in confidence building measures is something that we should talk about and be prepared for confirmation of American decisions," said Sikorski.
Rood noted that he thought it is vital to inform "Polish friends" on the course of ongoing negotiations. They cannot be held without Poland's participation, Rood stressed at a joint press conference.
Asked about the possibility of deployment by Russia of its missiles near Poland, Rood said that such situation should not take place, adding that this will be a challenge in the process of building confidence measures.
The U.S. and Poland formally signed in August an agreement to deploy parts of the U.S. global missile shield in the East European country.
Russia objects the anti-missile shield plan, saying it will threaten Russian national security. Moscow has warned that it will deploy a short-range missile system in its Baltic enclave of Kaliningrad bordering Poland, in response to U.S. plans to set up a missile shield in central Europe.
