The U.S. embassy in Cyprus called in local emergency authorities on Monday morning to clear a suspicious package it received, officials said.

Specialists wearing protective suits were sent to the embassy to collect the package, which will be opened and examined at a state laboratory.

The U.S. embassy in Cyprus, located in the west of Nicosia, is fortified with concrete bumpers.

Since Dec. 8, U.S. embassies in 18 countries have received envelopes with white powder, but most of them have been found to be harmless while a few envelopes are still being tested.
