French President Nicolas Sarkozy Sunday expressed his deep concern over the escalation of violence in southern Israel and the Gaza Strip to Palesinian President Mahmoud Abbas during telephone talks, local media reported.

Sarkozy "strongly condemned the provocations that led to this situations and the disproportionate use of force," according to a statement from the Elysee. He regretted the loss of lives and called for an immediate end to rocket attacks on Israel and Israeli shelling on Gaza.

During the conversation, the two leaders agreed to stay in contact in the coming days, the statement said.

In a statement Sunday night, French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, whose country is holding the rotating EU presidency till the end of 2008, called on European countries to use their weight to stop the fighting.

Kouchner reiterated "the full support of the European Union to the efforts of Egypt, the Palestinian Authority and the Arab League to restore calm and return to the truce."

On Sunday, hundreds of protesters went to the streets in Paris, denouncing Israel's terrorist and inhuman violence in Gaza Strip and calling for a end to fighting, police said.
