The Albanian parliament adopted a new electoral law amendment on Monday after President Bamir Topi had refused to sign the original.

The original was passed in the 140-seat parliament in November, which called for the president to announce national elections nine months in advance.

Topi argued that next year's elections are agreed to be held in late June and that there is enough time left for him to sound the gong for the commencement of the elections.

Topi is required by law to set an election date one week after the amendment, which cleared the parliament floor by 116-3, comes into effect in January.
