Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian Prime Minister Julia Tymoshenko separately phoned European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso on Wednesday night to inform him of the failure of the talks on natural gas supplies.
Putin explained the problems over gas supply to Ukraine and the possible consequences to gas consumers in the European Union (EU), said the European Commission's press service. Barroso expressed the hope that a negotiated solution can be found between the two countries and that gas supplies to the EU will not be affected.
In her conversation with Barroso, Tymoshenko assured Barroso that gas supplies to the EU via Ukraine will not be interrupted.
Russia's gas export monopoly Gazprom said on Wednesday that all gas supplies to Ukraine will be switched off on Thursday after talks failed on the repayment of Ukraine's debts and a new contract for supplies in 2009.
