Belgian Foreign Minister Karel de Gucht expressed his extreme concern on Sunday about the Israeli incursion into the Gaza Strip, Belgian broadcaster VRT reported.
De Gucht said he was extremely concerned because the Gaza Strip is a small area with a very dense population.
He feared for "an enormous number of casualties" if ground troops enter such an area. "Inevitably more and more of the casualties will be civilians," he was quoted as saying.
The foreign minister also warned of a humanitarian catastrophe, as a massive ground offensive would affect humanitarian aid efforts.
On Saturday evening Israel sent thousands of ground troops into the Gaza Strip to combat Hamas militants. Dozens of Palestinian militants are believed to have already been killed in the operation.
The ground incursion follows a week of heavy bombardments of the Gaza Strip in retaliation for rocket attacks on Israel launched by Hamas. Source:Xinhua
