As of 2009, the European Union (EU)begins to adopt a single safety certificate for all vessels navigating on all rivers in the EU, including the stretches of th eRhine and the Danube outside EU territory.
The new certificate, delivered in compliance with common requirements under a 2006 directive, is aimed at increasing the safety of passengers and freight transport by inland waterway in the EU.
The new directive replaces 25-year-old technical rules. The previous certificate was not valid for navigation on the Rhine, through which the major part of Europe's inland waterway transport is channeled.
