A blast in an ammunition disposal plant in southern Albania killed a worker and injured another Tuesday, the Albanian Defense Ministry said.
The victim, a 45-year-old woman, died of head injuries following the explosion in a shell disposal factory in Polican, a town 100 km south of the Albanian capital of Tirana, a ministry spokeswoman said.
"The explosion occurred outside the demolition wing of the depot while the victim was burning old artillery cases," she said.
Last year, an explosion at an army depot in the village of Gerdec near Tirana left 26 dead, 300 wounded and more than 2,000 homes damaged.
Albania reportedly has some 100,000 tons of old ordnance waiting to be destroyed. Source:Xinhua
