Ukraine stopped its supplies of Russian natural gas to Hungary on Tuesday afternoon, Hungary's Energy Minister Csaba Molnar said.

Hungary's government will request power stations with the capability to switch to alternative energy sources to limit their natural gas use from 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Molnar said after a meeting of a crisis committee for natural gas supply, according to Hungarian New Agency MTI.

Gas supplies from Austria were reduced by about half to 3 million cubic meters, the report said.

The maximum daily amount of gas that can be drawn from Hungary's more than 3 billion cubic meters of commercial gas stores is 51.5 million cubic meters.

The report said that preparations would begin to draw on reserves from Hungary's strategic stores. Hungary has 500 million cubic meters strategic gas.

On Monday, Ukraine reduced gas deliveries to Hungary by 8 million cubic meters from the 38 million cubic meters stipulated in its supplies contract because of a row over prices between Ukraine and Russia.

Gas consumption in Hungary reaches 13-14 billion cubic meters every year. Daily consumption in winter is about 60-70 million cubic meters. More than three-quarters of gas consumed in Hungary is imported from Russia directly or indirectly.
