Romania may resort to its own natural gas stocks to ensure supply after Russia cut off all its supplies to the country amid price rows with Ukraine, the chief of Romgaz, Romania's largest gas producer, said Wednesday.
Romgaz's gas storage may still provide supplies for 100 days, said General Manager Francics Toth, noting that the company has some 2 billion cubic meters of natural gas reserves.
The period can actually be even longer, considering a temperature increase of 3 degrees reduces consumption by some 10 percent, he said.
"Temperature cannot remain the same until March, so the period for which we can assure gas supply is longer," Toth said.
Meanwhile, Ioan Rusu, general director of Romania's state-run gas pipeline operator Transgaz, said there is no crisis at the moment.
"We received no claims linked to eventual problems in the gas supply system."
Prior to the Russia-Ukraine gas dispute, Romania imported nearly 10 million cubic meters of Russian natural gas each day, about 30 percent of its total supplies.
Economy Minister Adriean Videanu said Wednesday that all Russian gas supplies to the country had been halted.
Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia, Croatia, Serbia and Turkey also reported a shutoff of gas supplies from Russia, while France, Germany, Austria, Poland and Hungary reported substantial drops in gas deliveries from there. Source: Xinhua
