Romania declared a state of emergency Wednesday as gas supplies from Russia were completely cut off in the fallout of Moscow's price row with Ukraine.
Economy Minister Adriean Videanu made the announcement after an emergency meeting summoned by his ministry.
The declaration empowers Transgaz, Romania's state-run gas transmission firm, to take necessary measures to keep the country's gas transport and supply in safe condition.
Russian gas company Gazprom stopped supplies to Ukraine on Jan.1 after the two countries failed to reach an agreement on gas prices for 2009. The dispute worsened Wednesday after Gazprom completely cut off gas supplies via Ukraine to Europe.
Prior to the row, Romania imported nearly 10 million cubic meters of gas daily from Russia.
Ukraine sits on the main transit route for Russia's gas exports, with about 80 percent of Russian gas supplied to the European Union passing through it.
