Finland will send more peacekeepers to monitor the upcoming presidential and provincial elections in Afghanistan, according to reports reaching here from Helsinki.
Finland is preparing to send about 100 troops to temporarily reinforce its participation in military crisis management in northern Afghanistan, the Finnish government said in a statement Friday.
The deployment schedule for the temporary troops will be specified when the Afghan administration reaches a decision on the exact date of the elections, it added.
The polls are expected sometime between June and September.
The smooth running of the elections is of great significance to Afghanistan's stability and democracy, the statement said.
Although Afghan security authorities bear the primary responsibility to make security arrangements for the elections, they need support from the NATO-led ISAF (International Security Assistance Force) mission, it added.
