Russia has not delivered the S-300air defense systems to Iran under a deal cut with the Islamic republic two years ago, a high-ranking Russian official said Wednesday.

"Air defense systems S-300 were not supplied to Iran under the contract concluded two years ago. Meanwhile, the contract is being fulfilled gradually," the Itar-Tass news agency quoted an official of Russia's Federal Service of Military-Technical Cooperation as saying.

Russia has no intention of giving up the estimated hundred-million-U.S. dollar contract, according to the official.

"Further fulfillment of the contract will mainly depend on the current international situation and the decision of the country's leadership," he said.

He added that military-technical cooperation with Iran "is proceeding under the earlier reached agreements and in compliance with all international commitments."

The S-300s are sophisticated, medium-range surface-to-air missile systems and have a longer range than the Tor-M1 systems.

Israel has urged Russia not to deliver such systems to Iran, alleging that Iran wants to develop a military nuclear program and such a deal will not serve the interests of peace in the Middle East. Tehran insists its nuclear program is solely for civilian purposes.
