The European Union (EU) urged Georgian authorities and the opposition to end the political impasse and engage in dialogue, said EU Envoy for the South Caucasus Peter Semneby on Sunday in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia.
According to reports reaching here, Semneby said after meeting with some opposition leaders that the EU believes Georgian authorities and the opposition should meet and mitigate tensions.
Semneby was cited by Georgian Kavkaz press as saying that though ended fruitless, the first talks between the two sides still accounted for a major step toward the alleviation of tensions.
He said the two sides currently lacking mutual trust shall take actions and engage themselves in further dialogues.
Prior to the meeting, the envoy also said that the political situation in Georgia matters not only to the Caucasus country, but also to the entire EU. The EU will closely follow the situations and support Georgia for democratic reforms.
In return, some of the opposition leaders voiced willingness to conduct dialogue with the authorities after the meeting. However, former Parliament Speaker Nino Burdzhanadze believed the continuation of dialogue "senseless."
"(President Mikhail) Saakashvili needs this dialogue to drag out time, to stop the public protests and to resolve the problem that way," said Burdzhanadze.
