An Air France passenger plane went missing Monday with more than 200 people on board, news agencies reported, quoting a Paris airport spokesperson.

Brazil's air authorities confirmed that an Air France jetliner has disappeared over the Atlantic Ocean.

The Airbus 330-200, which was bound for Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris, lost contact with the control center shortly its takeoff from Rio de Janeiro.

Reports said the plane disappeared from radar screen over the Atlantic off the Brazilian coast.

News reports varied about the number of passengers on board, with some saying that 216 aboard while others saying 228 on board, including 12 crew members.

The flight left Rio de Janeiro on Sunday at 7 p.m. and was expected in Paris on Monday at 11:15 a.m. (0915 GMT).
