A Greek Airforce F-16 fighter plane crashed on Thursday morning near Ioannina, northwestern Greece, while its pilot managed to eject to safety.

According to an Airforce General Staff (GEA) announcement, the F-16 jet was on a training flight near the area of Ioannina when it crashed at 10:33 a.m. local time Thursday.

The pilot successfully used the automatic ejection system to eject to safety.

The announcement said that the pilot was in contact with another jet fighter in the area, adding that a Super Puma helicopter was on the way to pick up the downed pilot and transport him to the closest hospital.
