The European Union (EU) on Thursday condemned an attack against a patrol of the EU Monitoring Mission (EUMM) in Georgia, in which the driver of an accompanying medical vehicle was killed and the doctor was injured.

The incident occurred Sunday near the border between Georgia proper and the breakaway region of Abkhazia.

"The (EU) presidency recalls that EUMM is an unarmed mission that aims at normalization of living conditions in the region, and reiterates that any attacks on EUMM's unarmed monitors and their patrols are absolutely intolerable," said the Czech Republic, which holds the rotating EU presidency, in a statement.

The Czech Republic appealed to all parties on the ground to assume their responsibility for ensuring stability and security in the territories under their control, said the statement.

The EU insists that the perpetrators of this attack be brought to justice.

Russia and Georgia fought a brief war in August 2008 over South Ossetia, another breakaway region of Georgia. After the war, Russia recognized South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent states and enhanced military presence in the two regions.
