Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and his U.S. counterpart Barack Obama will focus on a new treaty on nuclear arms cuts during their upcoming summit in Moscow, a spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday.

The heads of state will discuss the most pressing bilateral and international issues, Andrei Nesterenko told a regular press conference.

"High on the agenda will be a new strategic arms reduction treaty that will replace the old one. The two presidents will sum up the results of the work that had been done and will give instructions as to further efforts," Nesterenko said.

They are also expected to touch on the situation in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Iran, Afghanistan and the Middle East, Nesterenko said.

He confirmed that Russia and the United States were discussing cooperation on cargo transit to Afghanistan.

"We are holding active consultations with the U.S. side on the efficient forms of interaction on Afghanistan, including an opportunity for military transit," he said in comments on reports that the two countries are drafting an agreement on transit to Afghanistan.

Obama is scheduled to visit Moscow on July 6-8.

It will be the president's first visit to Russia since he took office in January.
