Greece celebrated on Wednesday its 69th anniversary of entering World War II with an impressive military parade and a series of student parades.
The military parade was held at Great Alexander's avenue in Thessaloniki to commemorate the heroes who fought against Nazi Germany and fascist Italy.
"People worldwide admired men and women who overcame human fears and limits. It's a great chapter in our history. In a peaceful environment in the Balkans today, patriotism is the altruistic offer in upgrading daily life and promoting social cohesion," Greek President Karolos Papoulias said while addressing the celebrations.
The main student parade was staged in front of the parliament and Syntagma square, and dozens of smaller parades took place in the city's districts.
Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou stressed in his message the heroism of Greeks in 1940 was still a source of inspiration for younger generations in front of today's challenges.
"Being proud of our past, we believe in ourselves and we are united in a fight for a better future, a strengthened democracy and social justice," the prime minister said.
