Belarus to mull over recognition of Abkhazia, South Ossetia

The Belarussian parliament plans to consider the recognition of Georgia's two breakaway regions next week, Russian media reported Thursday.
"Next week, the parliament will start considering the recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia," the RIA Novosti news agency quoted Vladimir Makei, head of the presidential administration, as saying.
He said Belarussian lawmakers will visit the two regions "to study the situation. "
Russia and Georgia fought a five-day war when Georgia tried to retake South Ossetia, which broke away with Abkhazia from its rule during a war in the 1990s that followed the collapse of the SovietUnion.
In response, Moscow sent in troops to drive Georgian forces out of the region and recognized South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent states two weeks after the conflict ended. So far, only Nicaragua and Venezuela have followed Russia's suit.
