The number of Austrian workers expecting the economy to recover soon has fallen since the start of the year, according to a report released by the country's public employment service on Friday.

About 55 percent of Austrian workers had "great" or "quite large" confidence in the country's economic recovery in the near future, down 6 percent from the figure at the beginning of this year, according to the Austrian working climate index.

White-collar workers were generally more optimistic about the prospects of the economy than blue-collar workers, the report said.

Austria's economy, which is strongly dependent on external markets, has been seriously affected by the current global economic crisis and has witnessed a sharp decline in its foreign trade.

The latest statistics show that, from January to August, Austria's foreign trade volume fell by more than 20 percent compared to the same period of last year. And the foreign trade deficit has amounted to as much as nine times that of the same period last year.

The current economic situation had made fixed-income employees in various types of companies in Austria more pessimistic, with more than half dissatisfied with their employment prospects, the report said.
