Bosnia, Croatia and Serbia to sign agreement on enforcement of prison sentences

Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia have agreed on all important points of an agreement that will ensure the enforcement of final court verdicts for persons holding dual citizenship, the Bosnian Justice Ministry said on Wednesday.

"The most important points of the agreement have been agreed upon and will be signed this month, most probably around Dec. 17,"Justice Ministry spokeswoman Marina Bakic was quoted as saying by the Croatian state news agency HINA in Sarajevo.

The justice ministers of the three countries are expected to sign in Sarajevo amendments to the existing agreements on international assistance in criminal matters. The amendments will commit the countries to arresting convicted persons who avoid the serving of prison sentences by abusing the benefits of dual citizenship.

The constitutions of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbiado not allow their citizens to be extradited even when they have been convicted in other countries.

According to information the Bosnian Justice Ministry has received from the Croatian police, 46 persons convicted by Croatian courts are currently hiding in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Onthe other hand, Bosnian court records show that 106 convicted Bosnian citizens have found sanctuary in Croatia, 100 in Serbia and 24 in Montenegro.
