The president of the European Union (EU) on Tuesday made his first visit to Kosovo and encouraged the EU missions there to continue to fight crimes and corruption.
Herman Van Rompuy's visit occurred at a time of intense investigations by the European Union Rule of Law Mission (EULEX) in Kosovo into alleged corruptive affairs involving senior local officials.
"As a president of the European Council, prior to your achievements, you are doing valuable and very important work sometimes in very difficult circumstances," Van Rompuy said after a meeting with Roy Reeve, vice chief of EULEX.
"Rule of law is one of defining values of the European Union and one of our most important priorities here in Kosovo," he said.
Van Rompuy said the activities of EULEX and other EU missions in Kosovo reflect the EU's strong commitment to the fight against organized crime and corruption, and were crucial for the development and support of the organization's work in Kosovo.
