Georgian, U.S. presidents discuss no supplies of arms: Georgian official

A senior Georgian Foreign Ministry official on Monday stated that the Georgian president had not discussed with his U.S. counterpart the issue of arms sales to the South Caucasus country.

Deputy Georgian Foreign Minister Nino Kalandadze told a routine briefing that Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili and U.S. President Barack Obama had not discussed about supplies of U.S. air and anti-tank defense arms to Georgia during Saakashvili's recent trip to Washington.

"No detailed discussion was held on the questions that 'Commersant' proves a case," said the foreign ministry official, "They discussed the questions that were a priority according to the USA-Georgia Charter, among them the security issues; nevertheless no attention was paid to the provision to Georgia of military equipment."

The Russian edition of magazine Commersant has reported that during the Saakashvili-Obama talks, supplies of U.S. arms to Georgia had been touched upon.

The magazine reported that the U.S. president had even instructed the American security council to study all the issues as raised by the Georgian president and to prepare special reports.
