Armed clashes between Hamas-run police and a Gaza-based clan renewed on Saturday morning after two days of ceasefire, killing a clan member, sources with the clan said.
They said that Mohammed Helles of their family was killed and a number of the family members have been wounded in the new surge of violence between the Helles clan and the Hamas police force in the Sheja'eya neighborhood in eastern Gaza City.
Mu'awia Hassanien, director of health ministry ambulance service, said that at least three wounded people were ferried to hospitals, but he added that the number of the injured may be bigger as the ambulances were unable to reach the area of the clashes.
The clashes started on Wednesday night, when a group of members of the clan, which sides with President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement, refused to hand over weapons and cars belong to the former security forces loyal to Abbas.
Wednesday's clashes killed five people, including a Hamas police officer, and wounded more than 30 others from both sides, being the fiercest clashes since Hamas forced out the Fatah- dominated security forces and took over the Gaza Strip in June.
A ceasefire brokered by the Popular Resistance Committees (PRC), an armed group close to Hamas, was imposed on Thursday morning after the clashes claimed five lives.
However, it collapsed this morning when the family refused to hand over some of its members to Hamas police forces that administrate the Gaza Strip.
