The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) on Monday slammed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas for trying to thwart a conference that Hamas plans to hold in Syria against a U.S.-sponsored peace conference.
"Abbas' efforts against Damascus conference are in line with the Israeli and American orders," Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoom said in a statement.
Israel and the U.S. treat Syria and the Palestinians as enemies, Barhoom said, adding "the American pressures are aimed at eliminating the Palestinian refugees' issue from any Palestinian and Arabic agenda."
"Hamas will continue facing every project of conspiracy, ties normalization and coordination with Israel," said the statement, calling on Arab and Islamic nations to support Damascus conference and the Palestinian people's rights.
Hamas has called on the Palestinian factions to participate in a general conference that will be held in Damascus next month outside the framework of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).
Hamas says the conference will raise the people's awareness about any concessions that the Palestinian National Authority under the chairmanship of Abbas may made during Annapolis conference in the U.S.
In July, U.S. President George W. Bush proposed to hold the peace conference in the United States this fall to find a way to resume the stalled peace process and end the chronic Middle East conflict between the Arabs and Israel.
