Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas expressed on Saturday his commitments to implementing the first phase of the Road Map plan on Mideast peace, said an aid to Abbas.
Nabil Abu Rudeineh told reporters that Abbas made the remarks at a meeting in Ramallah with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's deputy for Middle East affairs David Welsh.
"President Abbas expressed to Mr. Welsh the Palestinian commitment to the implementation of the Road Map peace plan and the Arab Peace Initiative issued in the Arab Summit held in Beirut in 2002," said Abu Rudeineh.
Rice is scheduled to arrive in the region on Saturday night, where she will meet on Sunday with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Foreign Minister Tzipi Levni in Jerusalem.
Abu Rudeineh said Rice will meet with Abbas and the Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad in Ramallah on Monday.
"President Abbas urged the American side to exert every possible effort to help the two negotiating teams, the Israeli and the Palestinian, to agree on the joint document that will be presented to the summit in Annapolis (of the United States)," said Abu Rudeineh.
He revealed that "the current Palestinian measures on the ground indicate that the Palestinians are implementing the first article of the Road Map plan, adding "President Abbas asked the U.S. diplomats to be committed to its part in the plan."
The first phase of the Road Map calls on the Palestinians to take control of security in the Palestinian territories, confiscate arms from militants and stop armed attacks on Israel. Israel in equivalence is asked to stop settlements' activities. Source: Xinhua
