The U.N. refugee agency said on Tuesday that it was very concerned about the displacement of people in northern Iraq caused by the ongoing shelling by Turkey.
Last weekend more than 1,800 people fled their homes in Sulaymania and Erbil of northern Iraq, said Astrid van Genderen Stort, spokesperson of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
"The displaced people told us that 10 villages had been affected by the shelling. One woman was reported killed and several people injured," Stort told a news briefing in Geneva.
On Monday, UNHCR teams on the ground reported continued shelling by Turkey in the Sangasar Pishdar area of northern Iraq, causing even more displacement, Stort said.
The UNHCR with its partners on the ground have quickly dispatched non-food items such as blankets, mattresses and kitchensets to Sulaymania and Erbil after being asked by the local authorities to provide additional help to those displaced.
Turkish troops and warplanes have recently launched operation in northern Iraq in pursuit of militants of the outlawed Kurdish Workers' Party. The operation has caused high tension on the Turkish-Iraqi border. Source: Xinhua
