Palestinians look for an active U.S. role to pave the way for launching serious talks with Israel, Yasser Abed Rabbo, an official from the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO), said on Wednesday.
Abed Rabbo added that the building of Israeli settlements in West Bank and the checkpoints that cut the roads between the Palestinian communities were obstacles delaying the peace process progress.
He highlighted the American role in pushing the talks as important, urging the U.S. to act as a judge between the Palestinian Authority (PA) and Israel in carrying out the U.S.-backed Road Map peace plan.
Ahead of a visit by U.S. President W. Bush to the region this month, Abed Rabbo will head for Washington to discuss "the issues that could move the negotiations with the Israelis forward."
Meanwhile, Palestinian information minister Riyadh al-Maliki said that the upcoming visit by Bush was "a proof that his administration was interested to follow up what it had started at Annapolis," referring to the U.S.-hosted peace conference where Israel and the PA agreed to resume the negotiations.
