An aid to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas warned on Thursday that the ongoing Israeli offensive on Gaza would undermine peace negotiations between the two sides.

The official, Nabil Abu Rudeineh, called on the United States "the major sponsor of the Middle East peace process for immediate contribution, in order to contain the situation and stop more deterioration."

"If the situation continues to deteriorate, and becomes uncontrolled, I'm afraid we will loose a historic opportunity to make a just and comprehensive peace in the entire region," said Abu Rudeineh.

Official medical sources in Gaza said that Israel had killed since Tuesday 27 Palestinians in air and ground strikes in the Gaza Strip. However, most of the killed are militants, who launch daily homemade rockets at Israel.

Well-informed Palestinian sources said that President Mahmoud Abbas and chief Palestinian negotiator Ahmed Qurei held a meeting in Ramallah on Thursday to discuss halting talks with Israel on the light of the Israeli offensive.

Israel vowed to continue attacks on Palestinian militants in Gaza Strip, mainly those who belong to Hamas movement, who fire rockets from Gaza at Israel. More than 50 rockets were fired at Israel since Tuesday.
