An American soldier was shot dead by insurgent's small arms fire during combat operations in southwestern Baghdad on Saturday, the U.S. military said on Sunday.
The soldier was announced dead in a military medical facility at about 3:30 p.m. (1230 GMT) as a result of fatal wounds suffered by the attack which occurred an hour earlier, a military statement said.
The name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, it said.
The latest death brings the number of U.S. soldiers who have been killed in Iraq to about 3,988 since the outbreak of the Iraq war in 2003, according to media count based on Pentagon figures.
