An Arab Parliamentary delegation arrived in Lebanon in an attempt to break the impasse blocking the election of a new president, local As Safir daily reported on Monday.
"We, in the Arab world, have fears that the security situation in Lebanon is fragile, and any security deterioration will have an impact on us," the head of Arab Parliament Mohammed Jassem al-Saqr was quoted as saying at his arrival on Sunday.
Saqr said they are not carrying a new initiative, but "have ideas that support the Arab initiative."
"We will do all we can for national reconciliation in Lebanon, if the situation requires we go to Syria, we will", Saqr added. The visit came just nine days before the scheduled election session on March 25.
Lebanon is currently facing the most serious political deadlock since the end of the 1975-1990 civil war. For the first time in its history, the presidential seat has been vacant since Nov. 24 of 2007 when former President Emile Lahoud stepped down.
A long-awaited parliamentary session to elect a new president to succeed Lahoud has been postponed for the 16th time from March 11 to March 25.
Arab League (AL) Chief Amr Moussa was engaged since Jan. 6 in breaking a deal between Lebanon's feuding parties to elect a new president.
His several trips did not succeed in implementing the AL initiative, which calls for the immediate election of Army commander Michel Suleiman as president, formation of a national unity government, and endorsing a new election law. Source:Xinhua
