Leaders representing Hamas and Islamic Jihad (Holy War) movements will head to Egypt for talks on a possible truce with Israel, well-informed Palestinian sources announced on Saturday.
The sources said that Islamic Jihad leader Khaled al-Batsh and Hamas leader Jamal Abu Hashem will head to Egypt later on Saturday to hold talks with high-ranking Egyptian officials.
The sources said the two leaders go to Egypt upon an Egyptian request, adding that the talks in Egypt will focus on reaching a truce with Israel and reopening the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt.
Israel had closed down all Gaza crossings and terminals including Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt after Hamas movement took control of the Gaza Strip in mid June last year.
The sources said that Islamic Jihad and Hamas expressed optimism over reopening the Rafah border crossing and reaching a truce with Israel, adding Rafah border crossing will be partially reopened soon.
"Rafah crossing will be partially opened soon amid Israeli-European and Egyptian agreement," said the sources without elaborating, adding "Hamas expressed a soft position concerning the arrangements at Rafah crossing." Source: Xinhua
