Lebanese Druze leader Walid Jumblatt has called for "necessary steps" to be taken to limit the"negative repercussions" of the four-month-old presidential vacuum,The Daily Star reported on Tuesday.
"There are some necessary measures to be taken in order to avoid Lebanon's destruction and transformation into a country alien to us," Jumblatt, leader of Democratic Gathering which belongs to pro-government majority, was quoted as saying on Monday.
The Druze leader also called for immediate dialogue between rival Lebanese political blocs "in order to find practical solutions on all levels."
Lebanon is currently facing the most serious political deadlocksince the end of 1975-1990 civil war. For the first time in its history, the presidential seat has been vacant since Nov. 24 of 2007 when former President Emile Lahoud stepped down.
Lebanese political rival groups were unable to reach a breakthrough, in spite of Arab efforts to resolve the crises.
The presidency deadlock deepened the Lebanese political crisis as fears are mounting that failure in reaching a deal on the presidential candidate could result in more violence in the country.
