Lebanese Christian opposition leader Gen. Michel Aoun said the ruling coalition lost an opportunity to solve Lebanese-Syrian crises by boycotting the Arab summit in Damascus, local Naharnet news website reported.
Aoun, also head of majority Christian MPs bloc in Lebanon, slammed Premier Fouad Seniora's government for leading Lebanon to the worst, saying that the government's decision to boycott the March 29-30 Arab summit in Damascus is "wrong."
Aoun also slammed the U.S. policy on Lebanon, saying "the U.S. policy is against Lebanon, this is my conviction out of my experiences," he said during an interview with Lebanese OTV station Wednesday night.
He said the U.S. is trying to isolate one third of the Lebanese people which is represented by Hezbollah, adding that his party is being blamed for reaching an understanding with Hezbollah.
"I can not understand the logic of the U.S. policy in Lebanon and neither that of the Lebanese government who are refusing to give the opposition partnership," Aoun said.
Lebanon is currently facing the most serious political deadlock since the end of the 1975-1990 civil war. For the first time in its history, the presidential seat has been vacant since Nov. 24 of 2007 when former President Emile Lahoud stepped down.
Lebanese rival groups remain unable to reach an agreement to elect a new president despite Arab efforts to resolve the problem.
An Arab initiative endorsed in Cairo on Jan. 6 calls for election of army commander Michel Suleiman as president, formation of a national unity government, and adoption of a new election law.
