Israel will continue peace talks with the Palestinians despite a deadly attack by Palestinian militants on an Israeli border terminal, Foreign Ministry spokesman Arye Mekel said Wednesday.
The remarks came hours after a group of Palestinian gunmen infiltrated into the Nahal Oz fuel terminal from the Gaza Strip and opened fire, killing two Israeli civilians and injuring two others.
"We decided that we will continue to talk and will not let terrorists have a veto voice on the talks with the pragmatic forces," said Mekel, referring to the peace talks between Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and moderate Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, which were resumed on Monday.
Mekel added that Israel would also continue to provide the supplies necessary to avoid a humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip as Olmert pledged after the summit.
It is not clear how much damage was done to the terminal, which supplies the Strip with most of its fuel, while local daily Ha'aretz quoted a European official as saying that the European Union is not expected to be able to restart its fuel deliveries to the Gaza power plant before Sunday.
"The plant has enough fuel on hand to last eight to nine days," the official said.
