Leaders of Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) factions in Gaza Saturday called on rival Fatah and Hamas movements to iron out their differences and resume dialogue.

PLO leaders as well as Palestinian notables recently have presented an initiative to end internal schism among the Palestinians, said Walid el-Awad, a senior leader of the Palestinian People's Party.

El-Awad said the PLO initiative calls on Hamas movement to end its Gaza Strip takeover and resume dialogue based on 2005 Cairo agreement, 2007 Mecca agreement and the prisoners' document of concord.

Meanwhile, Kayed el-Ghoul, a senior leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) told reporters that "Fatah and Hamas should reinforce the principles of dialogue in order to avoid more Israeli escalation."

He also called on the two movements to end their campaigns of incitement, stop mutual arrests in the West Bank and Gaza, and prepare for early presidential and legislative elections.

Several hundreds of PLO leaders and supporters as well as independents gathered in Gaza City, calling for a quick end of internal schism and an early dialogue between the two rival movements.

Last June, Hamas routed security forces loyal to Abbas and took control of the Gaza Strip by force after weeks of fighting with Fatah.

Abbas then dismissed the Hamas-led government and appointed Salam Fayyad to head a government in Ramallah.
