Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Seniora on Sunday urged Lebanese to elect a new president that would activate state institutions and the rule of law, and avoid anew civil war, local Naharnet news website reported.
Seniora made the remarks in a statement to the nation on the33rd anniversary of the civil war that broke out on April 13, 1975.
He recalled that even during the civil war years, the Lebanese "had managed to elect a president, more than once and this is the present priority."
He also called on all Lebanese to prevent the country from returning to 1975-1990 civil war.
"Now we are called to work towards achieving one goal, which is reactivating our Lebanese constitutional institutions, the basic priority for which is electing a new president," he added.
Lebanon is currently facing the most serious political deadlock since the end of the 1975-1990 civil war. For the first time in its history, the presidential seat has been vacant since Nov. 24,2007 when former President Emile Lahoud stepped down.
A long-awaited parliamentary session to elect a new president has been postponed for 17 times till April 22.
The presidency deadlock deepened the Lebanese political crisis as fears are mounting that failure in reaching a deal on the presidency could result in more violence in the country.
