Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert assured to the citizens of Israel that the international community is making great effort to prevent Iran from gaining nuclear capability, local media reported on Thursday.

"I want to tell the citizens of Israel: Iran will not have nuclear capability," Olmert told Ha'aretz daily in an interview ahead of the Jewish holiday of Passover.

Regarding the peace process with the Palestinians, Olmert declared that there is growing possibility reaching an understanding between Israel and the Palestinians during 2008, a goal set at a U.S.-hosted peace conference in Annapolis, Maryland last November when long-stalled negotiations between the two sides were revived.

The prime minister said that the issue of Jerusalem has not yet been discussed at all, neither in his talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas nor as part of the talks headed by Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni with Ahmed Qureia.

As to Syria, Olmert said "I know exactly what the Syrians want and I think the Syrians know what the State of Israel and I expect from the peace process."
