Egypt is still trying to mediate between Israel and Hamas to resolve the conflict between the two sides, visiting Egyptian President Hosny Mubarak said here Wednesday.

After a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Mubarak told reporters that Egypt was awaiting responses from both sides.

He said the two sides have to stop exchanging fire so that a good atmosphere can be created for talks.

He also welcomed the German conference penned for June 24 to rally support for the training of Palestinian security forces.

Mubarak hoped the conference could lend political support to the current talks aimed at allowing an "independent Palestinian state to arise."
