Israeli police discovered a suspicious package near the U.S. consulate in Jerusalem Friday afternoon, before using a robot to neutralize it.

At least five claps like gunshots were heard after police sent out a bomb disposal robot to handle the package near the back gate of the U.S. agency, said a Xinhua photographer who lived nearby.

Residents in the area were told to stay at home before police lifted the alert about half an hour later and left the scene which is also near to King David Hotel, in which U.S. President George W. Bush stayed during his visit to Israel in January.

Police at the scene refused to comment, and calls to the Israel Police spokesperson's cellphone were unanswered.

Israeli security officials have warned that intelligence has been detected indicating possible massive attacks during the Jewish state's 60th anniversary celebrations, part of which Bush is to attend in mid-May.
