Arab League (AL) Secretary General Amr Moussa said Thursday he was concerned about the current situation in Lebanon, where fierce gunfire between pro and anti-government movements occurred recently.

Moussa said in a press release that he had called Lebanese leaders and Arab foreign ministers to defuse the latest tensions in Lebanon.

Calling on the Lebanese leaders to avoid further confrontations, Moussa urged them to deal with the situation properly.

Moussa, who cut short his visit to Washington earlier in the day due to the fresh crisis in Lebanon, vowed to continue efforts and contacts at the Arab level on the Lebanese crisis.

AL Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs Ahmed ben Helli also voiced his hope on Thursday that the Lebanese should reach calmness and avoid a civil war.

Ben Helli said dialogue is the only way to solve the political crisis in Lebanon.

Meanwhile, Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hossam Zaki said Thursday his country supported a call to hold an Arab foreign ministers' meeting to discuss the deteriorating situation in Lebanon, the official MENA news agency reported.

According to earlier report, two people were killed and five wounded in fierce clashes in western Beirut on Thursday.
