U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, arrived in Baghdad in a surprise visit on Saturday, a U.S. embassy spokeswoman said. Pelosi, a Democrat critic against President George W. Bush's war in Iraq, would meet U.S. top officials, including ambassador Ryan Crocker and the commander of U.S. troops in Iraq Gen. David Petraeus, the spokeswoman said.

The top U.S. official would also meet senior members of Iraqi leadership, the spokeswoman said without giving further details. Pelosi was a leading Democrat opposition to Bush's "surge" decision in early 2007 which he send 30,000 extra troops to Iraq in a bid to curb escalating insurgency and sectarian violence.
