A local Iraqi police chief was killed on Monday in a bomb explosion in the police headquarters ina town in Dhi Qar province, a local police source said."Major Farhan Qassim Kattafi, chief of police unit in Souq al-Shiyoukh town near the provincial capital city of Nasseriyah, was killed early in the morning when a omb hidden in his office detonated," the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity. Two of Kattafi's bodyguards were wounded by the blast, the source said.

Kattafi's police unit, based in the town of Souq al-Shiyoukh, some 400 km south of Baghdad, is responsible for security in the vast marshes areas of the province.

According to U.S. and Iraqi officials, the Iraqi police have been widely infiltrated by Shiite militiamen, who frequently used their weapons and uniforms to facilitate attacks.
