A senior official with Israeli Defense Ministry will arrive in Egypt next week on the latest developments of the Cairo-mediated ceasefire talks with Hamas in the Gaza Strip, the state Egyptian MENA news agency reported on Thursday.
Gilad Amos will be briefed on the recent talks between a Hamas delegation and Egyptian intelligence chief Omar Suleiman on reaching a ceasefire between Israel and various Palestinian factions in the Hamas-ruled Gaza, MENA quoted well-placed sources as saying on condition of anonymity.
Deputy political chief of Hamas, Moussa Abu-Marzouq, on Wednesday ended talks with senior Egyptian officials on the truce deal with Israelis and left for Syria.
On Tuesday, Abu-Marzouq and another senior Hamas member and former Foreign Minister Mahmoud Zahar held talks with Suleiman to hear Israel's response to the proposal of a Palestinian-Israeli ceasefire.
Egypt has been trying to broker a truce between the Palestinian groups and Israel to en the violence between the two sides that threatens to wreck U.S.-backed peace negotiations between the Israeli government and the Palestinian National Authority (PNA), but no tangible results have been reached up to now.
Earlier in the day, Hamas leader Khalil al-Haiya said Egypt is continuing its efforts to broker a Palestinian-Israeli ceasefire. Source:Xinhua
