An American soldier was killed by a roadside bomb attack in south of the Iraqi capital, the U.S. military said on Saturday.

The soldier, assigned to Multi-National Division-Center (MND-C)was killed on Thursday when the bomb detonated in an area, some 20km southwest of Baghdad, a military statement said without further details.

The name of the deceased soldier is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, it added.

MND-C, also known as Task Force Marne, is responsible for security zones located along the southern edge of Baghdad and stretches from the border with Saudi Arabia in the west to the Iranian border in the east.

The latest death brings the number of U.S. troops killed in Iraq since the March 2003 invasion to more than 4,080, according to media count based on Pentagon figures.
